TRENDS...

Here is a look at my trends project.. I've written statements to explain my take on six trends!

Metallica

Shakespeare once said “All that glitters is not gold”, and in the case of this seasons metallic trend it could be silver, pewter, copper or variations of colour luxe!  Metallic features everywhere and is a trend that filtered enthusiastically down to all markets.  From being part of a fabric composition to being effectively dyed or painted on- there was metallic everything.  However I do think that going down from high market to middle to mass the tackiness did increase.

That 70's show

Glamorous chic and very ladylike, the A/W 2011’s take on the 70’s incorporates the demure pussy bow blouse.  From large Bows to more discreet the important factor here is fabric.  Soft and flowing fabrics make the bow less like Minnie mouse and more sophisticated.  Worn tied or left loose and open, it is a very versatile dressy look and very feminine.  This look follows through in all markets very well and is a big trend this year.

Suit Yourself

Oversized jackets, minimal shopping and a Wall Street vibe were a part of A/W 2011 cross dressing theme.  This is a theme which maximises femininity by manning it down as opposed to making women look plain butch.  An elegant relaxed trend, the look looks effortless when done in the high-end market but I feel it has been toned down considerably as it filters down to the mass market in an effort I presume to appeal to a broader market and make it more commercial.  Beautiful luxurious fabrics in the high end market were key.  And while wools and wool blends were still used in the mass market, the feminine shaping diluted this look a little too much.

Fur Trade?

Native indigenous peoples in freezing climates have always worn fur.  They do it for survival.  We lust after fur as a must have fashion accessory, from real to faux fur it’s everywhere for A/W 2011.  Full garments, trimmings and accessories.  A very tactile material-fur implies opulence, glamour and excess.  The selection of fur available this A/W 2011; both faux and real, is greatly diverse in its texture, colour and form.  The best products usually costing more money, but is it a guilty pleasure?  Fur evokes very strong views from most people.  Furriers claim that the manufacture of polyester and nylon copies of the ‘real thing’ involves chemicals that pollute the environment – Real fur being natural and biodegradable and therefore more ethical.  PETA campaigners and members claim “they would rather go naked than wear fur”.  Is there a difference in wearing real fur from animals killed solely for their skin or fur that is a by-product of the food industry?

The Swinging Sixties

The iconic image of Twiggy wearing a shift dress back in the 60’s has stood the test of time and is resurrected this A/W 2011.  Colour blocking or monochromes were most popular within this theme and detailing is kept to a minimum.  Fabric type varied widely although when the trend channelled down into mass market I saw an increase in the man-made fabrics, but the question could be asked, does polyester make the garment cheaper? Or does it simply make it even more retro?  As our parents/grandparents in the 60’s experimented the wash and wear revolution, with more and more garments made from polyester, they are wrinkle free, durable and colour resistant.

All About the Pattern

It wouldn’t be winter without a Knit or two and knitwear is everywhere.  But this year sees a return to a very retro theme in the patterned jacquard type knit, a Missoni inspired look being a strong feature.  There are beautiful knits available across all markets although the finer and more delicate wools are more prevalent in the high end market.  Here quality of fabric is key and makes these pieces good investment buys.  Within knit, I think you get what you pay for and a good cashmere merino or alpaca wool would keep you warm this winter.

So there it is.. these are my ideas on SOME of the many trends this A/W 2011!!

I SEA STRIPES

So, we are back after Easter and we have one more big project to do.. STRIPES is the title and its a swatch making project..yey ..! I picked tropical fish as my source and we were given a colour story, here are some pictures..
The cover

Here are some pictures of the swatches I was doing

This is my mood board and the colour story I was given.

next we had to do eight final small swatches and then an A3 final one of our choice.

We had to do a presentation with our boards this morning to explain what we did, it was quite nerveracking but a good experience for the future.

The final swatch, I like this swatch because its true to the source of the fish as the texture of the net with latex on it really feels fishey!
Overall this project was very good in terms of learning more about fabric manipulations, I experimented with techniques and materials that otherwise I may not have had the opportunity to do.  It was very enjoyable.

Now time for the Fashion Show!!!!!!! I have been assigned the job of a dresser so I'll be backstage I'm very excited!! :)

Then assesments then SUMMER.. :)

Easter project,, My house.

The Easter project was based on our home environment so I had alot of fun going around my area finding primary research..I took photos and made swatches inspired by those pictures.
Here are a few of the swatches I did.

this one was inspired by gates..

inspired by a stone wall.. very interesting and a knew technique i did was using a wire coolong rack and stuffing the material through the holes, then stuffed the holes with wadding and backed it twice with heavy vileen.  LOVE the end result with this!

inspired by glass crystal.. using bubble wrap and plastic.

same technique with the collonh rack only not stuffing it. this was to represent water in the river.

inspired by the cherry blossoms in my back garden.

also from the cherry blossoms.  I used chiffon to capture the light airy effect of the cherry blossoms and had fun with it.  chiffon is hard to use but worth it!

I had alot of fun with this project and expiremented with knew techniques like pin tucking.
It was a good opportunity to learn more about different kinds of materials that are available.

Finished piece..

After ALOT of work and fun with it at the same time..  I finally got my finished piece done and I have to say im very happy with it, take a look..

Time for Easter now :)

Since then I've picked my shapes and got to work with the manipulations, at first I chose boning, quilting and biscuiting because i didnt know which one i liked more.  Soon i narrowed it down to boning and biscuiting.  I love the biscuiting and I loved the boning, but together (unfortunetly) they did'nt really work, so after long debates with myself I decided to give up the biscuiting and just work with the boning! I will upload photos of the boning and the biscuiting now so you can see for youself..

So I have decided to go with just boning on its own and create a voluminous structure with it! I really like the idea and I'm very excited to get working on that now hopefully have a good start at it over the weekend.  I dont quite have a final design yet but when I play around with lots of boning on the manican.

After sacrificing my lovely boning :) I then got an idea that the knots might tie into the design quite well now and it suits the sourcl. I will do up lines of knots in the leather and pin then to the boning to decide if they are right for it and if so where will I place them...?
well its just been a CRAZY week.. I'll start by uploading images of the research so you no where I started from..

 MEMORIES..

 ELECTRIC..

 TRIBAL...

 DECAY...

 And my chosen theme, ENCLOSURE.
After doing research into all four, then further reseach into enclosure I decided to go with parks, but not whats in parks, what encloses them!  I was going to investigate park railings and gates.

I did find that there werent many shapes i could get out of railings at first, however i was overlooking the negative space, all of a sudden there was loads more shapes to work with.

RANKING...

Well, just finished the first day of ranking and boy was it busy!!  I arrived home from the New York trip just yesterday so I was feeling a bit tired today and also a bit behind as I had to start my research.  I am thinking of doing parks now that I have delved into all five areas, but focussing on park railings and fences, I don’t know yet but I’ll see tomorrow when I hopefully start on the analytical drawings.  I know I feel a bit behind but it was worth it because the trip was amazing! I would move there in a flash.. When I’m finished college of course :) ,but now all I need to do is wrap my head around the brief and get going to catch up. So far that’s all the news because I spent the day doing research on each five words.  I hope to know more tomorrow as I also need to put up on my blog a bit from each of the five words as part of the research project!
